American modern electric blues guitar virtuoso; lyricist, vocalist. Jimi Hendrix was a self-taught guitarist who rose to fame in the 1960s. He began his career backing R&B greats such as Ike and Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, and B.B. King. In London, he formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. Their debut album "Are You Experienced" was released in 1967 and earned Hendrix international acclaim as a premier rock instrumentalist and innovator of his generation.

After a landmark appearance at the Monterey Pop festival, Hendrix released two more successful albums - "Axis: Bold As Love" (1968) and "Electric Ladyland" (1968). These albums showcased his blues-oriented developments and further solidified his status as a musical genius. Despite his untimely death in 1970, Hendrix's music continued to captivate audiences through posthumous releases like "The Cry Of Love" (1971) and the soundtrack to the documentary film "Jimi Hendrix" (1973).

Jimi Hendrix's talent as a guitarist and innovative approach to music made him an iconic figure in rock history. His contributions continue to inspire generations of musicians worldwide.

Legacy is Sony Music Entertainment's catalog and reissue label. It was introduced by Columbia Records in 1960 for historical recordings. In 1990, CBS Records relaunched Legacy for reissues and repackaged releases. Since then, it has been used by CBS's successors. The label, sometimes indicated as "Legacy Recordings," is known for its extensive collection of *historical recordings* and *reissued albums*. Following the breakup of The Experience, Hendrix took a sabbatical in Woodstock, New York, hooked up with bassist Billy Cox, his old air force running mate, and began jamming with a wide variety of musicians, including R&amp;R drummer Buddy Miles. Hendrix had become self-conscious about his image as a showman and rocker, and about the limitations of thrashing through the same repertoire night after night. Band Of Gypsys was an attempt by Hendrix to redefine himself, and in a way heralded his return to the ethos of the blues and R&amp;B, a return assisted by a powerhouse, groove-oriented rhythm section.

During their brief tenure as a band, Band Of Gypsys performed on New Year's Eve at the Fillmore East, and this live recording captures some of Hendrix's most monumental solos, particularly his long, intensely emotional improvisation on "Machine Gun" (including the screeches of bombs and gunfire) and his pithy blues work on "Who Knows".

Buddy Miles's "Them Changes" illustrates Hendrix's mastery of funk, while "Message of Love" and "Power of Soul" demonstrate his remarkable ability to provide a simultaneous rhythm accompaniment and melodic counterpoint to his vocals, in the blues tradition of Robert Johnson.

Band Of Gypsys was markedly different from Hendrix's work with experience, but rivals it in terms of scope, vision, and beauty.
