John Powell is a British soundtrack composer, born on 18 September 1963 in London, England, UK. He is an accomplished violinist, violist, and guitarist who studied composition at Trinity College of Music in London. During his time there, he received the John Halford and Boosey and Hawkes Bursary Music College Prizes.

In 1988, Powell began composing music for commercials and gradually transitioned to independent films, feature films, and television. He moved to Los Angeles in late 1995 and worked with Hans Zimmer for seven years (1995-2002), as well as individually in 2008 and 2011. Since then, he has worked on numerous soundtracks for US film productions and currently resides in Marina Del Rey, California.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 is the most successful, (621M Box office), of the 1.65 Billion trilogy of animated films, which also had an eight year run as a popular television program. The soundtrack was composed by John Powell, who has created the archetype for modern animation scoring, having created the music behind Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, most of Ice Age, Rio, The Lorax and many others. This soundtrack has never had a standard vinyl release, much less this deluxe edition which will be presented across two LP's in a gatefold jacket and pressed on red mult-colour splatter vinyl, in keeping with the theme of the green multi-color splatter on the How To Train Your Dragon 1 LP release, which was also produced exclusively for RSD in 2021. As with the first soundtrack, the theme song of the second film is done by Jonsi from the Icelandic band, Sigur Ros, and is unavailable anywhere else.
