Asylum is a US label that was formed in 1971 by David Geffen and Eliot Roberts. Initially specializing in mainstream rock and singer/songwriters, the label signed notable artists such as Judee Sill, David Blue, Jackson Browne, and Jo Jo Gunne. In 1974, Asylum scored a major coup by signing Bob Dylan during his brief estrangement from Columbia Records. Throughout the 1970s, the label released albums by influential artists like Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Warren Zevon, as well as former members of Eagles, Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield.

From 1971 to 1973, Asylum was distributed by Atlantic Records. However, in August 1973, Warner Communications combined Elektra and Asylum Records to form Elektra/Asylum Records. Geffen left the label in 1980 to establish Geffen Records. Although the Asylum name was retired from new releases in 1989, it made occasional appearances for country releases in 1992.

In 2004, after Warner Music's acquisition by private investors led by Edgar Bronfman Jr., Asylum was reactivated as a southern-oriented hip-hop label. It also became the distributor for Rap-A-Lot Records and Swisha House Records. Despite being considered an independent label within Warner Music structure today; its numbering system and UPC prefix align with Elektra Records.

Joni Mitchell is a Canadian musician, songwriter, and painter born on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta. She began her career singing in small nightclubs in Western Canada and then busking on the streets of Toronto. In the mid-1960s, she moved to New York City and became famous as both a songwriter and singer. Her personal album "Blue" was ranked #30 on Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. Mitchell's music evolved over time, incorporating jazz influences and addressing social and environmental themes. She is also an accomplished visual artist.

Throughout her career, Joni Mitchell has collaborated with renowned jazz musicians such as Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, and Charles Mingus. Her unique guitar style and complex piano arrangements set her apart from other artists of her time.

In recent years, Mitchell has focused more on painting but released her first album of new songs in nine years titled "Shine" in 2007. Despite reducing her recording and touring schedule since the 1980s, she remains a highly influential figure in the music industry.

Shadows and Light is the second live album by Joni Mitchell. It was released in September 1980 through Asylum Records, her last release for the label. It was recorded in September 1979 at the Santa Barbara Bowl in Santa Barbara, California.

For the album, Mitchell was backed by a band of acclaimed jazz and fusion musicians consisting of guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist Jaco Pastorius, drummer Don Alias, keyboardist Lyle Mays, and saxophonist Michael Brecker. Additionally, vocal group the Persuasions appear on the title track and a cover of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall in Love".
