Rough Trade Essential

Kaytranada is a Haitian-Canadian music producer and DJ, born on August 25, 1992 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He relocated with his family to Montreal at a young age and was raised there. With his unique style and talent, Kaytranada has made a name for himself in the music industry. He is also known as part of the hip hop duo The Celestics.

An independent record label, XL Recordings was launched in 1989 by Richard Russell and his team. Originally an off-shoot of City Beat Records, XL quickly became known for releasing rave and dance music. Over the years, XL has grown to become one of the leading labels in the industry, managing a roster of talented artists including *Leah Riches*, *a6001996*, and *a60243*. In 1996, XL officially incorporated and became the copyright-holder of its releases. To celebrate their 15th anniversary in 2004, XL launched their XLXV series of re-issues. Today, they continue to thrive as a pioneering force in the music world.

Kaytranada is back with his highly anticipated debut album 99.9% via XL Recordings.

The album finds the Haitian born, Montreal raised producer delivering on the promise of his early self-released EPs and remixes. Since the age of fourteen, when he first began to DJ and when his brother introduced him to music production software, his output has been relentless. He explains, "after he showed me the basics, from that day on I couldn't stop making beats," pumping out a handful of tracks per day for the next couple of years. 

Single releases like&nbsp;"Drive Me Crazy"&nbsp;with Vic Mensa and "Leave Me Alone"&nbsp;with Shay Lia soon spread his name like wildfire. With their release, Kaytranada cemented his reputation and his sound; an undeniable swing of the drums comparable to Dilla's, a signature soulful touch in the melodies, and a healthy dose of funky bass lines. 99.9% continues that tradition, and new track "Bus Ride", which features acclaimed percussionist / producer Karriem Riggins as well as rising Toronto vocalist River Tiber, demonstrates that Kaytranada has stayed within his canon while demonstrating growth on the new album.
