kristin hersh was in fully reflective mood, rejecting the subtle rockisms of throwing muses over 15 tracks for an even more pared-down acoustic experience than her debut solo album, 1994's 'hips and makers'. the surrounding of acoustic guitar with occasional piano, accordion and tambourine suits the naked confessional style of her voice and gives more room for her intriguing obscure lyrics like 'cold water coming for the warm water junkies' to breathe. like you is as poppy as counting backwards by throwing muses, but more typical is home which tiptoes out of the speaker before hersh's temper breaks through, stirring up the sudden drama of nirvana without recourse to electric guitar.
