Laughing Hyenas were an American alternative rock band based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, that existed from 1985 to 1995. The band was formed by vocalist John Brannon (ex-Negative Approach), guitarist Larissa Stolarchuk (ex-L-Seven), bassist Kevin Monroe, and drummer Mike Danner. Danner would quickly be replaced by Jim Kimball. Both Stolarchuk and Monroe, who were new to their respective instruments when the band formed, would adopt the surname "Strickland" during their time in the band.

This line-up remained intact through the band's first 5 years, recording 3 LPs. Monroe and Kimball then departed to form the band Mule while Brannon and Stolarchuk added bassist Kevin Reis and drummer Todd Swalla (ex-Necros). This line-up released the 1992 EP "Crawl". Ron Sakowski (ex-Necros) would replace Reis on the band's final LP, 1995 "Hard Times".

Brannon went on to form Easy Action and later re-launched Negative Approach (with both groups featuring contributions from Ron Sakowski). Tragically, Larissa Stolarchuk passed away in October of 2006.

Third Man Records was founded in 2001 by Jack White, Ben Swank, and Ben Blackwell in Detroit. In 2010, they established a physical location in Nashville, TN. The TMR building serves as the company headquarters and houses the label's offices, a vinyl record store, photo studio, dark room, and performance stage.
The label is best known for producing bands such as The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and The Dead Weather. They have become synonymous with high-quality vinyl records and have created a strong presence in the music industry.
With their commitment to preserving the art of vinyl records and their dedication to supporting emerging artists, Third Man Records continues to be a driving force in the music e-commerce world.

LP1 - Hard Times. Hyenas went down to Memphis to the legendary Easley Studios to record their final LP with the one and only Doug Easley. On Hard Times, we see the Hyenas influences are more Howlin’ Wolf / Muddy Waters than they are Nick Cave / Iggy Pop. Every bit as emotionally ruthless as their previous releases, the Laughing Hyenas went out on a high note with Hard Times. LP2 - Crawl EP / Covers EP. 2 years after releasing Life of Crime, Kevin Strickland and Jim Kimball had left to form Mule. Many people thought this marked the end of the band; not the case. Todd Swalla (of Necros) stepped in on drums and Kevin Ries on bass. Over the new slightly toned down direction, the sound of the band somehow seemed even more extreme.
