Blue Note is a record label that has made a significant impact in the jazz genre. Founded in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis, Blue Note focused on traditional jazz and swing recordings, producing timeless classics. In the 1950s, it became one of the first labels to feature bop musicians. After being acquired by *Universal Music Group* in 1965, Blue Note expanded its repertoire to include more commercially-oriented music like jazz-fusion. Throughout the years, Blue Note underwent various changes in ownership and reissue programs but continued to release new recordings and previously unreleased material.

In 1982, Blue Note catalog reissues began appearing on *United Artists Records*, which was owned by Michael Cuscuna who oversaw the UA-era reissue program. The label was later relaunched as part of *Capitol-EMI's* subsidiary *Manhattan Records* in 1985. It was during this time that Blue Note released key albums from its history and introduced previously unissued material.

In 1989, Blue Note became the division under which all of Capitol-EMI's jazz activities were organized. However, two years later, *Manhattan Records* was revived for smooth jazz and pop-jazz releases while Blue Note continued to thrive as a prominent label within Capitol-EMI's roster.

Lee Morgan (born July 10, 1938, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - died February 19, 1972, New York City, New York, USA) was an American jazz trumpeter known for his work in the hard bop genre. He collaborated with notable artists such as *John Coltrane*, *Dizzy Gillespie*, and *Wayne Shorter*. His influential album "The Sidewinder" released in 1963 remains a classic in the jazz world. Unfortunately, his promising career was tragically cut short when he was fatally shot in 1972.

With a distinctive trumpet sound and exceptional improvisational skills, Lee Morgan's music captivated audiences around the world. He drew inspiration from various musical styles including bebop and blues. Morgan's collaborations with fellow musicians showcased his versatility and creativity on stage.

Influenced by artists like *Freddie Hubbard* and *Clifford Brown*, Lee Morgan contributed significantly to the development of hard bop during the mid-20th century. His compositions combined catchy melodies with complex harmonies that pushed boundaries within the genre.

This sleek and beautifully paced Lee Morgan album was recorded in 1966 but shelved until 1984 for unknown reasons. In addition to the trumpeter, the quintet here features a superb line-up with Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Cedar Walton on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums, all playing at the top of their game. Highlights include the Duke Pearson gem “Is That So” and the enticing title track penned by Morgan.
