Record Store Day 2024

Marc Bolan, born Mark Feld, was an English singer-songwriter, musician, guitarist, and poet. He gained fame as the lead singer of the rock band T. Rex. Tragically, he passed away in a car accident just before his 30th birthday.

Born on September 30, 1947 in Hackney, London, England, Marc Bolan left a lasting impact on the music industry during his short but prolific career. His son Rolan Bolan continues to carry on his musical legacy.

With a unique blend of glam rock and folk influences, Marc Bolan's music resonated with audiences around the world. Some similar artists who have been inspired by his sound include T. Rex themselves along with Mott The Hoople, Mick Ronson, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, and many more.

Initially a British folk-rock combo called Tyrannosaurus Rex, fronted by guitarist/vocalist Marc Bolan. They became glam rock pioneers and shortened their name to T. Rex in 1970. They had a series of top ten hits in the UK, including four number one singles. In America, the group only had one major hit - "Bang a Gong (Get It On)". They retained a following until Marc Bolan's death in 1977.
T Rex was an influential artist who started as a folk-rock band known as Tyrannosaurus Rex before transitioning into glam rock under the shortened name T. Rex. Led by the talented guitarist and vocalist Marc Bolan, they achieved great success with numerous top ten hits in the UK, including four number one singles. Although their popularity was limited in America, they did have one major hit with "Bang a Gong (Get It On)". Despite Marc Bolan's untimely death in 1977, T Rex continued to maintain a dedicated fan base.

The only album credited to Marc Bolan and T. Rex and released in March 1974, Zinc Alloy was the last T. Rex album to be produced by Tony Visconti, and features the autobiographical hit single “Teenage Dream”. Recorded at Musicland Studios in Munich, Bolan was heavily influenced by his new relationship with songwriter Gloria Jones , and a new interest in black music that he heard on US radio stations while on tour in 1973. This 50th Anniversary Edition is presented as a zoetrope picture disc, based on the original limited edition multi-layered “lattice” sleeve. Viewed with a smartphone running a third party stroboscope app, the images appear animated.
