Matmos is an American experimental electronic duo active since the mid-1990s and based in Baltimore, Maryland. Named after a "seething lake of evil slime" from the cult sci-fi film Barbarella, Matmos gained prominence for their postmodernist approach and ability to create "listenable" music from bizarre objects. Their releases feature samples and sources ranging from amplified crayfish nerve tissue to solid gold coins and plastic riot police shields.

Daniel and Schmidt, the members of Matmos, create concept albums with diverse themes such as surgical procedures, Western/country genres, medieval music, various types of plastics, whirlpool washing machines, and ganzfeld experiments & parapsychology. They have been signed to labels like Matador Records and Thrill Jockey Records.

Throughout their career, Matmos has collaborated with guest musicians including Lesser, Jon Leidecker (Wobbly), Keith Fullerton Whitman, Dan Deacon, Jason Willett, Owen Gardner and members of Horse Lords, People Like Us, Matthew Herbert. They have also worked extensively with Björk on remixes as well as her albums Vespertine and Greatest Hits.

Thrill Jockey is an American independent record label that was established in 1992 by Bettina Richards, a former A&R representative at Atlantic Records. Originally based in New York City, the label relocated to Chicago, Illinois in 1995.
With over two decades of experience, Thrill Jockey has become a prominent force in the music industry. Known for its diverse roster of artists and commitment to artistic integrity, the label has consistently released groundbreaking and innovative music across various genres.

'Ultimate Care II' is the new album from renowned conceptual electronics duo Matmos (Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt). Recorded in the basement studio of their home in Baltimore, the album is constructed entirely out of the sounds generated by a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II model washing machine. Like its namesake, the album runs across its variations as a single, continuous thirty eight minute experience that starts with the grinding turn of the wash size selection wheel, and ends with the alert noise that signals that the wash is done. Between these audio-verite book-ends, we experience an exploded view of the machine, hearing it in normal operation, but also as an object being rubbed and stroked and drummed upon and prodded and sampled and sequenced and processed by the duo, with some occasional extra help from an ultra-local crew of guest stars (some of whom regularly do laundry chez Matmos). Dan Deacon, Max Eilbacher (Horse Lords), Sam Haberman (Horse Lords), Jason Willett (Half Japanese), and Duncan Moore (Needle Gun) all took part, either playing the machine like a drum, processing its audio, or sending MIDI data to the duo's samplers. The vocabulary of the 'Ultimate Care II', its rhythmic chugs, spin cycle drones, rinse cycle splashes, metallic clanks and electronic beeps are parsed into an eclectic syntax of diverse musical genres.
