Description

Part of the Flying Dutchman Jazz Classics series, delivering classic and rare albums from this important label. All feature the original artwork and new sleeve notes and are taken from original source tapes with bonus tracks where available. This is an unusual album in Ornette Coleman s catalogue, and one most critics passed by. It provides a special insight into the free jazz pioneer's way of working in the early 70s. It was recorded at Coleman's large loft space in downtown New York, where many experimental musicians, locked out of playing established venues, were inspired, so allowing a whole scene to flourish. The music is a romp, with Ornette playing trumpet as well as saxophone. His quartet, which featured second saxophonist Dewey Redman alongside long term cohorts Ed Blackwell and Charlie Haden, proved to be the perfect foil for this short set.
