Peter Gabriel is an English singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and entrepreneur. Born on 13 February 1950 in Chobham, Surrey, England, he is known for his contributions to the music industry.

Originally the lead singer of prog-rockers Genesis from 1967 to 1975, Gabriel left the band to pursue solo projects. Throughout his career, he has achieved multi-platinum selling albums and established himself as a successful artist.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Gabriel founded the annual WOMAD music festival and owns Real World Studios, one of Britain's most sought-after recording studios. He also holds joint ownership of Solid State Logic, a prominent recording studio hardware manufacturer.

Real World Studios is a residential recording studio in Box, Wiltshire, England associated with the [l4066] Ltd. record label, founded by [a11136].
Among many other unique facilities it has one of the world's largest control rooms, which allows special recording situations whereby musicians, engineers, producers and guests are no longer separated during the recording process.

Plays Live was compiled from live recordings made at four venues across the American Midwest in late 1982. It is effectively a sign-off to the first phase of Peter Gabriel the solo artist. As such, it’s a celebration of all that was achieved on that opening quartet of self-titled long-players, while also standing as confirmation that Peter was an engaged and engaging frontman. At the time, all bar one of the tracks would be familiar to the Gabriel completist, the exception being the previously unreleased I Go Swimming. A studio vocal version of the song has still never been released. The touring band captured by the recordings consists of Peter, alongside Jerry Marrotta (drums and percussion), Tony Levin (bass and stick), David Rhodes (guitar) and Larry Fast (synthesizer and piano), whilst the iconic cover image of Peter in ‘monkey mask’ make-up was taken by long-time collaborator Armando Gallo.

Vinyl cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy Mastering, mastered by Tony Cousins at Metropolis and overseen by Peter’s main sound engineer Richard Chappell. The album also looks amazing with a wide-spine single sleeve and full colour printed inner bags that are faithful to the original LP design. All images are newly re-scanned.

This CD release contains the full 16-track version of the Plays Live album, long out of print in its full glory. 

For many years only an abridged 1CD, 12-track version has been available which omitted the tracks The Rhythm of the Heat, Not One of Us, Intruder and On the Air. These are now back in their rightful place.

This 2CD release utilises the iconic original artwork in a new layout design by Peter Gabriel’s long-time designer Marc Bessant.
