Sleep is a stoner rock band hailing from San Jose, California. Formed in 1990, the band emerged from the remains of Asbestosdeath and consists of Al Cisneros on vocals and bass, Matt Pike on guitar, and Chris Hakius on drums.
After their initial breakup, Matt Pike went on to form High On Fire while Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius reunited in OM. In 2009, Sleep reunited for two sets at All Tomorrow's Parties. The following year, they resumed touring with drummer Jason Roeder replacing Chris Hakius.
With their unique sound and powerful performances, Sleep has become a legendary name in the stoner rock genre.

This seminal release is one of the key artifacts of the entire stoner / doom genre; 9 tracks of riff laden sludge that surfaced in 1991 originally. Now considered a benchmark release for the stoner rock elite. Sleep split in 1999, from the ashes arose High on Fire (featuring Matt Pike) and Om (featuring Chris Haikus and Al Cisneros).
