Sun Ra, born Herman Blount in Birmingham, Alabama in 1914, was an American Free-Jazz composer, pianist and band leader. He was a pioneer of free improvisation and modal jazz, as well as an early user of electronic keyboards and synthesizers. Sun Ra's music innovations and visionary experiences set him apart as a true musical innovator. He formed the Sun Ra Arkestra in the 1950s and continued to compose and perform until his death in 1993.Born and raised in Alabama, Sun Ra showed exceptional talent as a pianist from a young age. By the age of 11, he could sight-read and compose music. As a teenager, he performed with local jazz and R&amp;B bands before taking on his first full-time musical job leading the Sonny Blount Orchestra. In the mid-1930s, Sun Ra had a transformative experience during deep meditation where he claimed to have been transported to Saturn by beings from outer space who tasked him with spreading peace through music.

when sun ra and his arkestra were based in philadelphia, a period of stability resulted in some of his most well-loved albums like 'anquidity', 'sleeping beauty', and 'on jupiter'. at this time the arkestra typically consisted of 20 to 30 musicians, dancers, singers, and fire-eaters, combined with elaborate lighting effects, playing sets for two to three hours non-stop. the vitality heard on 'antique blacks' is a testament to the unique energy of the band's community at that time, as sun ra blends elements of free jazz, off-key synth explorations, and experimental theatre into an other-worldly concoction that doesn't crop up anywhere else in the arkestra's massive discography. 'antique blacks' takes its starting point from the bible and slavery, and throws these issues into the contemporary political frame hurtling up-to-date with late '60s civil rights. it is one of the key un-reissued sun ra albums now available again, including the classic 'space is the place'. comes with unpublished photography and new liner notes by the arkestra's michael anderson on printed inner sleeve.
