Demon is a UK 80s New Wave label that was founded by Elvis Costello, Andrew Lauder, and the company behind the label in 1980. In 1998, the label was acquired by Music Collection International and merged with its Westside Records operation. Today, Demon forms part of the Demon Music Group Ltd.

Initially a British folk-rock combo called Tyrannosaurus Rex, fronted by guitarist/vocalist Marc Bolan. They became glam rock pioneers and shortened their name to T. Rex in 1970. They had a series of top ten hits in the UK, including four number one singles. In America, the group only had one major hit - "Bang a Gong (Get It On)". They retained a following until Marc Bolan's death in 1977.
T Rex was an influential artist who started as a folk-rock band known as Tyrannosaurus Rex before transitioning into glam rock under the shortened name T. Rex. Led by the talented guitarist and vocalist Marc Bolan, they achieved great success with numerous top ten hits in the UK, including four number one singles. Although their popularity was limited in America, they did have one major hit with "Bang a Gong (Get It On)". Despite Marc Bolan's untimely death in 1977, T Rex continued to maintain a dedicated fan base.

Following the success of the 2LP set 1972, Demon Records is proud to announce two new releases in the Marc Bolan “Songwriter” series. This is a vinyl-only, intimate series that focuses on the private and creative Marc Bolan, with the emphasis on how that affected his songwriting. The first of these new releases is 1970, which takes us to the year in which Tyrannosaurus Rex metamorphosed into T. Rex. This 18 track selection commences with six tracks by Tyrannosaurus Rex, where songs like “Woodland Bop” point the way to the duo’s future sound. On side two, the electric T. Rex sound emerges with songs like “Beltane Walk” and the hit “Ride A White Swan”. As the sleevenote says, “By late 1970, Bolan was on his feet and sending fans home with his revival of Eddie Cochran’s teen anthem ‘Summertime Blues’. It was now time to write some teen anthems of his own”. • This release has been compiled and fully annotated by Mark Paytress, author of the definitive biography “Marc Bolan: The Rise And Fall of a 20th Century Superstar”, and the recently-published “Glam! When Superstars Rocked The World, 1970-74”.
