The roots of Chrysalis stretch back to a tiny flat in West London in 1967, when former university social secretaries, Chris Wright and Terry Ellis, linked their flair for managing and booking bands to form the Ellis Wright Agency. After trying to release their bands' records via other companies, they decided to start their own label.

In 1968, they signed a licensing deal with Island Records with the proviso that if their acts achieved an agreed number of hits, they would be awarded a label of their own. Within a year, this tally was reached and Chrysalis Records was born.

Over the years, Chrysalis went through various ownership changes. In 1985, Chris Wright bought out Terry Ellis and later sold the label to EMI in 1991. EMI was then acquired by Universal Music Group in 2012 before selling the Parlophone Label Group (including Chrysalis) to Warner Music Group in 2013.

Toumani Diabate is a renowned Malian kora player, born on August 10, 1965 in Bamako, Mali. He follows in the footsteps of his father, Sidiki Diabaté, and has become a respected figure in the world of music. With his exceptional talent and skillful playing style, Toumani has captivated audiences worldwide with his mesmerizing performances on the traditional West African harp-like instrument known as the kora.
Having grown up surrounded by music from an early age, Toumani's passion for the kora was ignited at a young age. New Ancient Strings is an album by world-renowned Malian kora players Toumani Diabate and Ballake Sissoko. Originally released by record producer Joe Boyd's (Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, Pink Floyd) Hannibal Records in 1999, the album was met with critical acclaim, and has since become a symbol of Mali's musical heritage and the kora tradition.To celebrate the 25th anniversary of New Ancient Strings, the album has been newly remastered and makes its vinyl debut.Inspired by the landmark 1970 album, Ancient Strings (recorded by their fathers, Sidiki Diabate and Djelimadi Sissoko), Toumani and Ballake took to making their own contemporary version. Many of the songs are taken from the original repertoire, but the music is all modern Mali and played beautifully making this an exemplary classic in its field.
