Atheist

Atheist is a technical death metal band from Florida, USA. Known for their highly complex playing and incorporation of jazz and latin elements into their sound, they have been making waves in the music industry since their formation in 1984. Originally known as Oblivion, the band changed their name to R.A.V.A.G.E. before finally settling on Atheist. Their debut album "Piece Of Time" was released in 1989, showcasing the talents of Kelly Shaefer (vocals, guitar), Rand Burkey (guitar), Roger Patterson (bass), and Steve Flynn (drums).

Tragedy struck in 1991 when Patterson passed away in a car accident while the band was preparing for their follow-up album. Tony Choy of Pestilence joined as his replacement. Although Atheist disbanded shortly after, they regrouped in 1993 with a new lineup featuring Choy, Jason Greenbaum (drums), Frank Emmi (guitar), and Shaefer on rhythm guitar due to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Their album "Elements" marked a shift towards more jazz and latin influences while toning down the metal aspects. After its release, Atheist split once again but made a comeback in 2006 with Shaefer, Flynn, Choy, Burkey along with guitarist Sonny Carson. Personal legal issues led to Burkey's departure and he was replaced by Chris Baker.
