Mats Gustafsson

Mats Gustafsson is a Swedish reeds player, improviser, and composer born on October 29, 1964 in Umeå. He draws inspiration from both the fiery free jazz blowing tradition and the European microtonal schools, showcasing his extended saxophone techniques. Growing up in Umeå, he was exposed to influential Swedish improvisers like Lars Göran Ulander and Per Henrik Wallin. Starting with the flute as his first instrument, Gustafsson later added saxophone to his repertoire. At just 14 years old, he created an instrument called the fluteophone by attaching a saxophone mouthpiece to his flute.

During his early career, Gustafsson collaborated with drummer Kjell Nordeson before forming the AALY Trio together. Moving to Stockholm in the mid-80s allowed him to connect with musicians such as Sten Sandell and Raymond Strid. In 1988, Gush was formed by these three artists while Gustafsson also worked alongside Sven-Åke Johansson in Berlin during this time period.

Gustafsson's talent brought him international recognition when he performed in Derek Bailey's Company in London back in 1990. As the '90s progressed, he became a regular member of Chicago's improvising community through frequent visits to the United States. Collaborating extensively with Hamid Drake and Ken Vandermark among others from this scene helped solidify his presence within it.
