Stephan Mathieu

Stephan Mathieu is a German mastering engineer. He operates Schwebung Mastering, preparing audio for analog and digital products, streaming media, and restoring archival material.

From 1989 to 2016, he was active as a musician, starting as a drummer before venturing into electroacoustic music and sound installation. Mathieu's unique sound is primarily based on early instruments and obsolete media. He records and transforms these elements using experimental microphony, re-editing techniques, and dedicated software processes.

Mathieu has released his music both solo and in collaboration with renowned artists such as Taylor Deupree, Ekkehard Ehlers, Fennesz, Robert Hampson (as Main), Akira Rabelais, and David Sylvian. His works can be found on respected labels like 12k, Editions Mego, Grönland, Line Records, as well as his own imprint called Schwebung.
