A Certain Ratio took their name from the lyrics of Brian Eno's song The True Wheel (from his album Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) (1974). Their first records were released on Factory Records. Over the years there have been changes in line-up and periods of inactivity.
A Certain Ratio is a British post punk and indie funk band that was formed in 1977 near Manchester. Inspired by Brian Eno's song "The True Wheel," they adopted their unique name. Initially signed to Factory Records, they released their first records through this label. Throughout their career, the band has experienced lineup changes and periods of inactivity.
With a blend of post punk and indie funk influences, A Certain Ratio has left an indelible mark on the music scene since their formation over four decades ago. Hailing from Manchester, England, the band derived its name from a lyric found within Brian Eno's iconic track "The True Wheel." Early on, they established themselves as part of Factory Records' roster before embarking on a journey marked by shifts in personnel and intermittent hiatuses.

A true British powerhouse - there is little that has come out in the past 40 years that hasn't been released - or at least - influenced by artists on this fantastic label. At the forefront of post-punk and electronic music having given breaks to <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/depeche-mode">Depeche Mode</a>, <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/a-certain-ratio">A Certain Ratio</a>, <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/throbbing-gristle">Throbbing Gristle</a>, <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/goldfrapp">Goldfrapp</a>, <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/moby">Moby</a> ... the list goes on.

The label was launched in 1978 from Daniel Miller's bedroom, in order to release the 7" from The Normal (T.V.O.D. / Warm Leatherette), recorded by Miller himself on a KORG 700S keyboard and a TEAC four-track recorder. He went on to sign Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (D.A.F.), Fad Gadget, Throbbing Gristle and Depeche Mode in quick succession.

But Mute have never been ones for looking back. This is about looking forward, this is not an anniversary, but an anti-versary. New albums from Du Blonde, Lost Under Heaven and Liars are on their way, but in the meantime, Rough Trade and Mute have been working closely together to re-release the records nearest and dearest to the label's heart.

The Graveyard and the Ballroom shows off A Certain Ratio’s legendary mix of angular, bass-heavy postpunk. Originally released in 1980 this album has been a collectors’ item ever since its initial release on cassette.

A Certain Ratio was one of the first groups to sign to the legendary Factory Records in Manchester. Whilst many people credit New Order and The Happy Mondays as the groups who brought dance music into the sound of Manchester, it is in fact A Certain Ratio who were there in the beginning. Formed in 1978, the initial line-up comprised Simon Topping (vocals), Martin Moscrop (guitar and trumpet), Peter Terrell (tape loops) and Jeremy Kerr (bass). Their debut seven-inch “All Night Party” was Factory Records fifth release. Soon after this Donald Johnson joined on drums.

Produced by Martin Hannett, The Graveyard and the Ballroom contains 14 tracks: 7 demo songs from a session recorded at Graveyard Studios in September 1979 and 7 songs from a gig at the Electric Ballroom in October 1979. The album captures A Certain Ratio at their best - raw, dark and funky and contains early versions of future classic tracks like “Do The Du” and “Flight”.

The limited edition white vinyl version is one of four limited edition reissue pressings to commemorate the release of the new A Certain Ratio album ACR Loco. They will be available on limited edition white vinyl with black and white versions of the covers.
