Anthony Williams, born on December 12, 1945 in Chicago, Illinois, was a legendary jazz/Fusion drummer known as Tony Williams. He gained recognition for his fusion project and his band with John McLaughlin. In the 60's, he was part of a renowned group and toured extensively with Herbie Hancock's V.S.O.P band. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 51 due to a heart attack after gall bladder surgery in 1997.
Williams' influential drumming style has made him highly regarded among drummers worldwide. His contributions to the music industry have left an indelible mark on jazz and fusion genres. Throughout his career, he collaborated with notable artists such as John McLaughlin and Herbie Hancock.
Although Anthony Williams is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through his groundbreaking work and the inspiration he continues to provide to aspiring musicians. His impact can be felt in the works of similar artists like Elvin Jones, Andrew Hill, Max Roach, Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, and many others.

Drummer Tony Williams had joined Miles Davis’ band and played on landmark Blue Note albums by the time he recorded his 1964 debut album, Life Time, at age 18. These five adventurous, original compositions featured Sam Rivers, Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Gary Peacock and Richard Davis.
