American guitarist and record label owner, Dick Dale, was born on May 4th, 1937 in Boston, Massachusetts. He is known as the "King of the Surf Guitar" for his pioneering work in surf music. Dale's 1961 single "Let's Go Trippin'" is considered the first surf record. His unique playing style involved staccato picking on heavy gauge strings and heavily reverbed amplification. He collaborated with Leo Fender to develop custom-made amplifiers that reflected the sounds and feeling of surfing.

Dale started his career playing around southern California with his backing band, *the Del-Tones*, in the late 1950s. They became a popular attraction and even appeared in several beach movies of the 1960s. Despite facing a bout with rectal cancer that forced him into retirement in 1965, Dale made a comeback in the 1970s under the name *Dick Dale & His Del-Tones*. In later years, he released solo albums and continued to perform live.

In addition to his musical achievements, Dale gained renewed popularity when his hit song "Miserlou" was featured as the opening tune for Quentin Tarantino's film 'Pulp Fiction' in 1994. Although he faced health challenges throughout his life, including battles with cancer and heart failure, Dick Dale remained dedicated to touring until his death on March 16th, 2019 at age 81.</
