Jefferson Starship is a US band formed in 1974 following the break up of Jefferson Airplane. The majority of the band members from Jefferson Airplane, including Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, David Freiberg, John Barbata, and Papa John Creach, joined forces with Craig Chaquico on lead guitar and Pete Sears on bass and keyboards to form Jefferson Starship. Their first album as a band was Dragonfly in 1974.

The name Jefferson Starship had previously been used for an all-star band backing Paul Kantner on his solo-album "Blows Against the Empire". However, it wasn't until 1974 that a real band bearing the name came into existence. Over the years, Jefferson Starship has undergone numerous lineup changes but has always retained its original member David Freiberg. Grace Slick left the band in 1978 due to reported alcoholic misbehavior but rejoined in 1981.

In 1984, band leader Paul Kantner departed from the group and a settlement prohibited the use of the Jefferson Starship name unless all original members were part of the lineup. As a result, the band changed its name to just Starship.

1976 was another banner year for the Jefferson Starship as their third platinum and gold plus smash album "Spitfire" raced to the top of the album charts as their previous hit album "Red Octopus" (Friday Music) accomplished a year before.

If you turned on your radio dial, it was definitely a summer of love that lasted all year long thanks to massive radio play on their hit songs "Crusin' " "With Your Love" and "St. Charles."

The core Jefferson Airplane founders were all in force with Grace Slick leading the band with her astounding vocals, Paul Kantner's dynamic guitar and vocals and Marty Balin's stellar vocal presence. Quicksilver's founder David Freiberg was back in command as well with his dynamic vocals and bass playing, plus Craig Chaquico on lead guitar, Pete Sears on keys and former Turtles and CSNY's Johnny Barbata on drums and vocals.
