Jim Croce was an American singer and songwriter, born on January 10, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He tragically passed away at the age of 30 in an airplane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Despite his short career, Croce left a lasting impact on the music industry with his heartfelt songs and captivating storytelling.

Croce's music resonated with audiences through his relatable lyrics and soulful voice. This LP was the last of the three that Jim Croce recorded for ABC/Dunhill, released after his death in a September 1973 plane crash. Although the title song and two others were not written by Jim, this album showcases his always improving songwriting and singing skills. The songs "I Got A Name", "Thursday" (written by Jim's friend Joe Salviuolo aka Sal Joseph), and "Salon and Saloon" (written by Jim's close friend and lead guitarist Maury Muehleisen, who also died in the plane crash) are all different from his usual style. This is especially true of "Salon and Saloon", featuring Jim's rich, emotional voice backed only by a single piano, a real departure for him.

Of Jim's own compositions, highlights include the lovely, deceptively simple "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song", sung in his warm baritone with aching tenderness; the more sophisticated and sadly beautiful "Lover's Cross"; and, fittingly, the last song on the album, "The Hard Way Every Time". It's a man looking back on his life, acknowledging mistakes, remembering falls he has taken and things he learned the hard way, yet saying he "..wouldn't 've done it any other way." The words seem to come from a much older man than 30-year-old Jim Croce, wise beyond his years. It's a bittersweet ending for the album and the man, and we're left wanting more, much more.
