Peter Gabriel is an English singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and entrepreneur. Born on 13 February 1950 in Chobham, Surrey, England, he is known for his contributions to the music industry.

Originally the lead singer of prog-rockers Genesis from 1967 to 1975, Gabriel left the band to pursue solo projects. Throughout his career, he has achieved multi-platinum selling albums and established himself as a successful artist.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Gabriel founded the annual WOMAD music festival and owns Real World Studios, one of Britain's most sought-after recording studios. He also holds joint ownership of Solid State Logic, a prominent recording studio hardware manufacturer.

Recorded in 1984, and originally released in March 1985, Birdy marks the first occasion that Peter worked with French-Canadian producer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Lanois who went onto co-produce both Peter’s So and US albums. The soundtrack to the Alan Parker movie of the same name – the tale of a Vietnam vet who harbours Icarus-like ambitions to fly – it finds Peter flexing his creative muscles free of any commercial pressures and has a number of tracks built out of elements of existing tracks from Peter’s third and fourth solo albums.
