He has worked with greats such as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, and Max Roach. In May 2007, he was awarded the prestigious Polar Music Prize. In March 2011, he received the National Medal Of Arts from President Barack Obama.

Previously only available as a bootleg, this is the first official release in cooperation with Rollins. Included in this 3 CD set is a multipage booklet with rare photos, lead liners by jazz scholar Bob Blumenthal and new interviews with Rollins himself. Mastered by the legendary engineer Bernie Grundman.
