Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee were a legendary duo in the world of blues music. They first met in 1939 and quickly formed a musical partnership that would span over four decades. Known for their unique blend of harmonica and guitar, they became one of the most influential acts in the Piedmont blues scene.
Both Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee had successful solo careers before joining forces, but it was their collaboration that truly set them apart. Their performances were characterized by Terry's soulful harmonica playing and McGhee's powerful vocals and intricate guitar work.
Throughout their career, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee released numerous albums and performed at countless venues around the world. They shared the stage with other greats such as Blind Boy Fuller, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, Memphis Slim, Big Joe Williams, J.B. Lenoir, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Lightnin' Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, Big Bill Broonzy, Tampa Red, Bukka White, Lonnie Johnson, Memphis Minnie,Sleepy John Estes,Big Walter Horton ,Jimmy Reed ,Robert Lockwood Jr.,and Jimmy Rogers .

The acoustic music duo of guitarist Brownie McGhee and harmonicist Sonny Terry were named National Heritage Fellows in 1982 in recognition of their distinctive musical contributions and accomplishments. Although primarily considered to be blues musicians, McGhee and Terry transcended the genre by including American folk songs and ballads in their repertoire. This 1958 recording, their first for the Folkways label, provides a small but inspiring example of the range of Americana and down-home blues music the duo performed throughout their 40-year partnership. The vinyl reissue of Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry Sing, which includes a liner notes booklet with the song lyrics and is part of Folkways Records’ reissue series, revisiting some of the most iconic and influential albums released on the record label.
