Tom & Ed met in history class at Manchester University in 1989. They started as DJs known as "The 237 Turbo Nutters" (named after the number of their house on Dickenson Road in Manchester and a reference to their Blackburn raving days). They then opted for "The Dust Brothers,” which they nicked from the L.A. producers of the Beastie Boys' 1989 Album "Paul's Boutique,” as they thought they would never be famous. In 1995 they changed their name to "The Chemical Brothers,” after the real Dust Brothers threatened to sue.

The Chemical Brothers, consisting of Tom & Ed, are an iconic electronic music duo who first came together while studying history at Manchester University in 1989. Originally starting out as DJs under the name "The 237 Turbo Nutters," a nod to their residence on Dickenson Road and memories of raving in Blackburn, they later adopted the moniker "The Dust Brothers." This name was borrowed from the renowned L.A. producers behind Beastie Boys' acclaimed album "Paul's Boutique," chosen with an assumption that fame would elude them forever. However, due to legal reasons stemming from copyright infringement concerns, they ultimately rebranded themselves as The Chemical Brothers in 1995.
