<p>The Cure is an English new wave / post-punk / pop rock band that was founded in 1976 in Crawley, West Sussex. Originally known as Malice and then Easy Cure, the band settled on The Cure in 1978. Throughout their existence, Robert Smith has been the frontman, songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist. With numerous line-up changes over the years, The Cure has remained a constant force in the music industry. In recognition of their contributions to rock music, they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2019.</p>

<p>Since its formation, The Cure has seen various talented musicians join and leave the band. Some notable members include Michael Dempsey on bass (1976-1979), Lol Tolhurst on drums and keyboards (1976-1989), Simon Gallup on bass (1979-1982, 1984-present), Matthieu Hartley on keyboards (1979-1980), Phil Thornalley on bass (1983-1984), Andy Anderson on drums (1983-1984), Porl Thompson on saxophone/guitar/keyboards (1983, 1985-1993, 2005-2011), Boris Williams on drums (1984-1994), Roger O'Donnell on keyboards (1987-1990, 1995-2005, 2011-present), Perry Bamonte on guitar/keyboards (1990-2005, 

New Wave / Post Punk

Out of all the bands that emerged in the immediate aftermath of punk rock in the late '70s, few were as enduring and popular as the Cure. Led through numerous incarnations by guitarist/vocalist Robert Smith (born April 21, 1959), the band became notorious for its slow, gloomy dirges and Smith's ghoulish appearance, a public image that often hid the diversity of the Cure's music. At the outset, the Cure played jagged, edgy pop songs before slowly evolving into a more textured outfit. As one of the bands that laid the seeds for goth rock, the group created towering layers of guitars and synthesizers, but by the time goth caught on in the mid-'80s, the Cure had moved away from the genre. By the end of the '80s, the band had crossed over into the mainstream not only in its native England, but also in the United States and in various parts of Europe. The Cure remained a popular concert draw and reliable record-seller throughout the '90s, and their influence could be heard clearly on scores of new bands during the new millennium, including many that had little to do with Goth.
