Rough Trade Essential

The White Stripes are a bluesy garage rock band from Detroit, Michigan (USA). Formed in 1997 by the duo of Jack White and Meg White, they gained recognition for their lo-fi sound and minimalist stage presence. Their music is influenced by folk blues, country, 60s Britpop, and Broadway show tunes. With their astute cover versions and original songs, they received acclaim for their self-titled debut album released in 1999. The media buzz surrounding them reached new heights with the release of their third album "White Blood Cells" in 2001 and "Elephant" in 2003.
By the time of their second album "De Stijl" in 2000, the White Stripes had already garnered attention in the UK where they were praised by national media outlets. They were compared to influential acts like Jimi Hendrix and the Sex Pistols. Their success continued with "White Blood Cells", which offered a contrast to digital conformity with its analogue recording process using vintage equipment. The album achieved commercial success worldwide.
The White Stripes officially ceased performing as a band in February 2011 but left an indelible mark on rock music with their unique blend of genres and undeniable talent.

Detroit's own 'brother and sister' drum-and-guitar duo broke out of local obscurity with their second album, a primitive garage romp that borrowed liberally from Led Zeppelin, The Kinks, the Rolling Stones, various American bluesmen and other rock and roll stalwarts.

With second album De Stijl, the band eschews its earlier raw posings in favour of blues with a hint of art rock. De Stijl (literally translated, the style, a European art movement that praises the virtue of simplicity in design), hints at a band that plays its music guided by simplicity in form and function. The 13 songs on De Stijl show this stripped-down duo coming into their own with more complex arrangements and more varied instrumentation. De Stilj features an electric violin, harmonica, and piano (played by singer <a href="https://roughtrade.com/search/smart?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;search%5Bterm%5D=jack+white">Jack White</a>). All in all, De Stijl offers more dynamic range and melody than the band's debut and a (comparatively) slick production. from the confectionery pop bounce of You're Pretty Good Looking, to the blues howler, Hello Operator, to the dirge-like Death Letter, (cover of the Son House, blues classic) De Stijl was a massive step forward.
