Wild Hares' Hare Ball and Tracy Santa's The Bottle of New Orleans is a dual release, a mini-LP offering five songs on each side of this Pill Pauper 10". This is Tracy Santa and Michael Salkind's third release on Pill Pauper, following Wild Hares (2011) and Wild Hares' Dose (2017). Both Hares have history, Salkind as a teenage drummer in DC's hardcore scene with No Trend and United Mutation, Santa in San Francisco's 84 Rooms and Idlewiles. Santa's subsequent solo work was described in Melody Maker as "REM phoned in from a kiosk in the Nevada desert." Hare Ball carries on Wild Hares' periodic transmission from this kiosk, five stripped down Santa originals, including a reworking of "Liquor Wagon" from his 1998 Lo-Fi Cowboy single (Corduroy, Australia 1998). The Bottle of New Orleans culls five songs from Santa's solo archives, rescued from decaying reel-to-reel tapes at Nashville's Welcome to 1979 studio. Two songs date from a July 1988 evening at Boston's Fort Apache studio with Sean Slade. Two more songs derive from a 1990 session in New Orleans with Beausoleil's Al Tharp at his 9th Ward studio. Maarten Schiethart in Penny Black Music described Wild Hares' Dose as "an album which defies marketing and popular taste, a small town affair quite universal in theme and tone." Hare Ball/The Bottle of New Orleans carries this effort forward--brief blocks of garage-pop and roll rough-hewn without particular concern for current style or pretense.
