<p>Cat Power is the recording/performing moniker of American singer-songwriter Chan Marshall. Born on January 21, 1972 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, she initially used the name "Cat Power" for her first band in Atlanta during the early 90s. Since then, it has become her stage name.</p>

The Matador label began in 1989 when [a=Chris Lombardi] dragged the Austrian duo H.P. Zinker into Wharton Tiers’ Fun City studio to record OLE-001, ...and there was light. Run out of Chris’ New York apartment, Lombardi added artists such as the Dustdevils, Railroad Jerk and Superchunk to the initial roster. Joined by longtime Homestead Records manager Gerard Cosloy in 1990, Matador experienced its first taste of crazed media attention & big sales with the North American release of Teenage Fanclub’s debut long-player, A Catholic Education. Over the years, the label has moved from shoebox sized offices to larger and larger complexes, the staff has grown from 2 to 24, and the roster has simply exploded. As well as functioning as the North American home to Pavement, Liz Phair and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Matador has helped artists such as Yo La Tengo, Cat Power, Cornelius, Solex, Pizzicato Five, Helium and the Arsonists reach audiences worldwide.

Matador has also served as the North American licensee for a number of exceptional international acts, including Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai, Boards of Canada, Red Snapper, Arab Strap and others. Since 1996, Matador has maintained separate offices and staff in London. In addition to supervising the promotion, sales and marketing of Matador titles on the continent, Matador Europe has also licensed recordings from some of North America’s most acclaimed new artists, M. Ward, Sleater-Kinney, Modest Mouse, and Superchunk to name a few.

While Matador has often been characterized (not by the label itself) as an underground or "indie" rock label, over the years, the label’s musical direction has grown, to the point where many hip hop, electronic and experimental acts play as prominent a role in the label’s sound & future as any number of singer/songwriters and rock bands. Sometimes all of the above converge.

During the 1990s, Matador entered into partnerships with [l=Atlantic] and [l=Capitol Records]. In 1999, Lombardi & Cosloy purchased back Capitol's 49% share of the label, and in 2002, [l613604] purchased 50% of the legal entities behind the Matador label / imprint [l390562] and [l291335] and took over Matador's worldwide marketing.

'sun' is the new studio album from cat power. six years after her last album of original material ('the greatest', 2006), chan marshall has moved on from her collaborative forays into memphis soul and delta blues. she wrote, played, recorded and produced the entirety of 'sun' by herself, a statement of complete control that is echoed in the songs' themes. marshall calls 'sun' - "a rebirth," which is exactly what this confident, ambitious, charismatic record feels like. "moon pix (1998) was about extreme isolation and survival in the crazy struggle," she says. "sun is don't look back, pick up, and go confidently into your own future, to personal power and fulfilment." the music on 'sun' employs a sweeping stylistic palette: there's the classic cat power haunting guitar and provocative vocal hook in 'cherokee' ("marry me to the sky...bury me upside down"); the irresistible latin-sounding nine-piano loop of 'ruin'; upbeat, almost dancey electronic anthems like 'real life' and '3,6,9'; and the stirring, 8-minute epic 'nothin but time,' featuring a vocal cameo by iggy pop. the swagger of 'silent machine' brings to mind mid-70s jagger, contrasted with the unusual, sparse production of 'always on my own'. the narrative arc of the record is deeply optimistic; the music is defiantly modern and global. though devoid of grave bedroom confessionals, 'sun' is possibly cat power's most personal album to date. for all its layered expansiveness, it is as handcrafted as her debut, and never has a cat power album so paralleled her personality and state of mind - channelling her humour, anger, deep empathy, musical inspirations, technical skill, and spiritual inquiry into an album that's both surprising and comforting. those versed in the cat power discography will detect elements of 2003's landmark album 'you are free', which experimented with vocal forms and beats borrowed from urban music, and the spellbinding authority of songs like 'american flag'. sonically, however, with credit to mixer philippe zdar (phoenix, chromeo, beastie boys), 'sun' is incredibly fresh, reflecting its forward-looking mindset. 'sun' was recorded over the past three years in malibu (in a studio she built herself), silver lake (in the dust brothers' studio the boat), miami (south beach studios), and paris (motorbass), where she mixed with zdar in spring 2012.</p>
