Short for "Subterranean Pop" 

The label was an outgrowth of [a=Bruce Pavitt]'s Olympia, WA based (print) fanzine, which became the well respected cassettezine of the same name. 

After his move to Seattle he ran a music column in the Seattle Rocket also called Sub Pop.

After initial forays into the record label world with a [a=Green River] 7" (not officially on Sub Pop) and the Sub Pop 100 LP, the label exploded onto the indie scene with four influential colored vinyl 7"s which included [a=Mudhoney]'s "Touch Me I'm Sick" which made the year-end top 10 playlist of nearly every music journalist in the world.

Subsequent hyping of the label in the English music press put them on the map, and grunge was born.

Flight of the Conchords is a New Zealand-based comedy band composed of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement. Their unique blend of comedy and music has garnered them international acclaim. They gained popularity through their BBC radio series and later, an American television series on HBO. With their witty lyrics and catchy tunes, Flight of the Conchords has become a household name in the world of comedy music.

The duo humorously referred to themselves as "New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo." Despite this self-deprecating title, they have managed to capture the hearts of fans worldwide with their hilarious performances. Today, they proudly hold the title of being "the almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand."

flight of the conchords follow the release of their six-track grammy award-winning (it's true!) cdep 'the distant future' with their full-length record album debut, the conveniently titled 'flight of the conchords' (which, not at all coincidentally, is also the name of their hbo television series). produced by mickey petralia (beck 'midnight vultures', ladytron 'light and sound') in los angeles, new york and wellington, the album features fully fleshed-out and professionally recorded versions of flight of the conchords concert and television favourites. and its release finally renders pointless all the inexpert fan-made audio transfers (the modern day equivalent of holding a microphone up to the television speaker and shouting at your mum to be quiet), which have bloated hard drives the world over. the songs are heard here in expanded but reverent arrangements. bret mckenzie and jemaine clement's trademark acoustic guitars lead the blitz, backed by a diverse array of instrumentation and production technique. and, the album sounds legitimate and musically, it's incredible, but, as shakespeare said, "does it funny?" happily, yes. if amazing, delightful and hilarious is your idea of funny, then prepare for undisappointment! these 15 songs pay homage to pet shop boys, censorship, marvin gaye, sexism, shabba ranks, and backhanded compliments. to be blunt, if you can't find a rire ou sourire in the fsl study guide of opening track, 'foux du fafa,' then, please notice, vous tes malade.
