A Tribe Called Quest was a critically acclaimed rap group formed in 1988 in Queens, New York City. The group consisted of Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Jarobi, and Phife Dawg. They were part of the Native Tongues Posse along with Queen Latifah, De La Soul, Black Sheep, Monie Love, and the Jungle Brothers. Their music blended jazz and hip-hop influences to create a unique sound.

After their debut in 1989 with "Description Of A Fool," they gained popularity with hits like "Bonita Applebum" and "Can I Kick It?" Their album "The Low-End Theory" showcased their blend of boom bap beats with jazz, funk, and soul melodies. ATCQ collaborated with jazz bass player Ron Carter and incorporated samples from artists like Lou Reed and Stevie Wonder.

Throughout their career, ATCQ released several successful albums including "Midnight Marauders," which earned them the Group Of The Year award at the Source Magazine Hip Hop Award Show in 1994. Their album "Beats, Rhymes And Life" debuted at number 1 on the Billboard chart in 1996. Although their later album "The Love Movement" received critical acclaim but lacked the spark of their earlier works.

The Jive label was launched in 1981 by Clive Calder and Ralph Simon of the Zomba Group of Companies. In 1983, it was introduced in the US. In December 2002, the Zomba Group of Companies including Jive label was acquired by BMG. Two years later, it became part of the Zomba Label Group under Sony BMG Music Entertainment. Since 2008, it has been a label of the Jive Label Group and RCA/Jive Label Group under Sony Music Entertainment.

In September 2011, it was announced that Jive, Arista, J and LaFace were absorbed by RCA Records, bringing all its artists to the RCA family.

Afterwards, in January 2020, *Jive* was relaunched as a division of Sony Music Entertainment Italy. It focuses on releasing hip hop/R&B/pop from up-and-coming Italian artists. The label's relaunch was led by Antonio Dikele Distefano, founder and editor of Esse Magazine.

Back in stock on US vinyl. A Tribe Called Quest weren't rap's biggest hit makers, but their signature numbers indeed fill this collection with style, eclecticism, and laid-back but deliberate flow; indeed, the group's stature seems to have grown since its 1998 breakup. 

The continued importance of their music and ideals for many hip-hop fans will only be enhanced by Anthology's 18 tracks (Q-Tip's recent hit "Vivrant Thing," from the Violator album is a bonus track). Those unfamiliar with Tribe's achievement should have their heads and booties set into motion by the fellas' many moods, from the playful "Check the Rhime" and "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" to trenchant commentaries such as "Description of a Fool" and "Sucka Nigga." And with its inclusion here, the somewhat rare and all-the-way out "If the Papes Come" will doubtless reestablish itself as an underground favorite.​
