Born on August 27, 1941 in Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde, she earned the nickname "barefoot diva" for her captivating performances performed without shoes. Cesaria Evora was renowned as the best-known performer of Morna and predominantly sang in Cape Verdean Creole, occasionally incorporating Portuguese into her songs.

Throughout her career, Cesaria Evora showcased her immense talent and brought the rich musical traditions of Cape Verde to a global audience. Her soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics resonated deeply with listeners, earning her critical acclaim and numerous accolades.

Tragically, Cesaria Evora passed away on December 17, 2011 in Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde. Her legacy lives on through her timeless music that continues to inspire artists around the world.

Record Store Day is an annual event inaugurated in 2007 to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store". Held on one Saturday every April and every Black Friday in November, the day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores around the world.

This 22-track collection by Césaria Evóra  contains the very first recordings made by the Cape Verdean singer in the early 1960s, with all tracks originally cut for the Mindelo radio station Radio Barlavento. 

The majority of the pieces were written by Gregorio Gonçalves, better known as "Ti Goy", who plays the guitar and/or drums on all tracks that also feature artist and songwriter Frank Cavaquim. 

The songs on this album range from love songs to social commentaries on issues of the day. Radio Mindelo gives listeners the chance to listen to the familiar voice of the "Queen of Morna" in her most purest essence during her young performances.
