Nonesuch is a US record label that was created in 1964 as a budget label for classical releases. It eventually expanded to include adventurous music from around the globe and world-premiere recordings of contemporary composers. Nonesuch has gone through various ownership changes over the years, including being acquired by Warner Communications in 1970 and becoming a sub-label of Warner Bros. Records in 2004.

Under the leadership of Jac Holzman, Nonesuch was established as a budget label for classical releases licensed from large record companies in Britain and France. Designed by Bill Harvey, the packaging emphasized affordability with releases marketed as "Recordings at the Price of a Quality Paperback."

In 1970, Nonesuch became part of Warner Communications (Kinney/WEA) and continued to release music under its own name along with other Elektra-based labels like Elektra and Asylum Records. The merger between Elektra and Atlantic labels in 2004 resulted in Nonesuch becoming a sub-label of Warner Bros. Records within the Warner Music Group.

John Adams (b. 1947) is an American minimalist composer and conductor from East Concord, NH. He is widely recognized as a leading figure in contemporary classical music. Adams is the director of The San Francisco Conservatory New Music Ensemble and has made significant contributions to the field of composition.

Some of his most notable works include "Short Ride In A Fast Machine" (1986), "Harmonielehre" (1985), and the minimalistic masterpiece "Shaker Loops" (1978). He also composed the Pulitzer-winning choral piece "On The Transmigration Of Souls" (2002), which pays tribute to the victims of the 9-11 attacks.

In addition to his instrumental compositions, Adams has written several acclaimed operas such as "Nixon in China" (1987) and "Doctor Atomic" (2005). His diverse body of work showcases his ability to create powerful musical narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide.

Girls of the Golden West is John Adams’ eighth music theatre work released by Nonesuch Records. Adams’ stage works are among the most performed contemporary operas of our time and include Nixon in China, The Death of Klinghoffer, El Niño, and Doctor Atomic. Girls of the Golden West is a California opera, telling the story of the Gold Rush not through familiar time-worn myth, but in the words and deeds of real people: in the words of Mark Twain, “the strangest population, the finest population … who ever trooped down the startled solitudes of an unpeopled land.” Longtime Adams collaborator Peter Sellars drew from original sources from the Gold Rush era - letters, journals, newspaper articles, and familiar song lyrics - to create the libretto. The composer leads the LA Phil in this recording made in Disney Hall.
