Matching Mole was a short-lived UK progressive rock band from the Canterbury scene. Formed by *Robert Wyatt* in October 1971, after his departure from Soft Machine, the band gained recognition for their song "O Caroline". Wyatt took on the roles of vocalist and drummer, while being joined by *David Sinclair* (of Caravan) on organ and piano, *Phil Miller* on guitar, and *Bill MacCormick* (formerly of Quiet Sun) on bass. The name "Matching Mole" is a playful pun derived from the French translation of Wyatt's previous group Soft Machine.

Their music can be likened to other notable artists from the Canterbury scene such as Hatfield & The North, Caravan, and Soft Machine. Matching Mole's unique blend of progressive rock showcased their musical prowess and innovation.

Recorded in an abandoned CBS studio in the cold winter of 1972, this is the historical first album of Matching Mole, Robert Wyatt's immediate post Soft Machine grouping featuring himself on drums and vocals and three of the most creative musicians from the legendary Canterbury scene. Guitarist Phil Miller (Hatfield and the North, National Health), keyboardist Dave Sinclair (Caravan) and bassist Bill McCormick (Quiet Sun). Matching Mole is the quintessence of Canterbury sound. A visionary mixture of open song forms, oblique lyrics and extended instrumental explorations. The opening Oh Caroline is a rare gem of songwriting and the whole album is a timeless masterpiece.

CD - Remastered from the original master tapes and is expanded to include five previously unreleased studio session alternate takes, the single versions of O Caroline and Signed Curtain, along with two BBC radio one sessions from 1972. The booklet restores all original artwork and includes and essay by Sid Smith.
