Emerging from Liverpool, England in 1960, The Beatles were a seminal British group that evolved from rock/pop origins into pioneers of musical experimentation. The band solidified its iconic lineup in 1962, featuring John Lennon (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboards), Paul McCartney (vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards, percussion), George Harrison (guitar, vocals, sitar), and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals, percussion) after signing a recording contract with EMI.Initially recognized for their Merseybeat style, The Beatles soon ventured into uncharted musical territories. They explored psychedelia and pioneered innovative production techniques that incorporated tape loops and other effects. Over their active years they created a legacy of 12 studio albums.Their profound impact on rock and roll was acknowledged in 1988 when they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame as a group. By 2015 each member had also received individual recognition for their contributions as solo artists within the Hall of Fame.

Rough Trade Essential

Apple Records, the record label division of the company owned by The Beatles, was launched in 1968. Initially licensed through EMI and distributed by Capitol Records in the USA, Apple released around 40 albums by various artists between 1968 and 1974. However, since then, it has primarily focused on administering The Beatles' catalogue from 1962 to 1976. Managed by Allen Klein from 1969 to March 1973 and later by Neil Aspinall until his retirement in 2007, Jeff Jones took over as CEO. In 2009, Apple reached an agreement with Apple Inc. to license their trademark. A remastering campaign of the entire catalogue began in 2010.

The standard Apple album and single labels featured a bright green Granny Smith apple on one side and a cross section of the apple on the other side. It is important to note that while many Apple Records issues also carried an EMI logo, this does not indicate EMI as a separate label but rather signifies that Apple was part of the EMI Group.

Following on from the global success of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Beatles (White Album), Apple Corps and USM are proud to present the next multi-format Beatles album reissue of Abbey Road to celebrate the iconic albums 50th anniversary.

In personal terms between the group, Abbey Road may have marked the beginning of the end but in creative terms it kept pace with the rest of the bands' -by now - classic back catalogue. Having outgrown, to some degree, the shackles of psychedelia, the Beatles began writing music that pointed to a future which they would, as an single recording entity, would have no part in. Come Together, She Came in Through the Bathroom Window, and plenty of now legendary cuts on this iconic record.
