Doctor Bird is a music label that was founded in the UK by Graeme Goodall, an Australian sound engineer and original shareholder of Island Records. The label was revived by Trojan Records in 1970 for three releases before being relaunched in 2017 as a division of Cherry Red Records. Doctor Bird specializes in vintage Jamaican sounds licensed from the catalogue of Trojan Records.
Graeme Goodall played a significant role in the Jamaican music scene, engineering sessions at various studios and producing countless recordings during the ska era. He also formed other labels such as Pyramid Records and Attack to promote reggae music. Despite relocating to Atlanta, Georgia in the 1970s, Goodall continued his involvement with music until his passing in 2014.
Today, Doctor Bird continues to bring Jamaican rocksteady and other vintage sounds to music enthusiasts worldwide through their curated selection of releases. With its rich history and dedication to preserving iconic Jamaican music, Doctor Bird remains a respected authority on this genre.

The Maytals is a Jamaican Ska & Reggae vocal trio that was formed in 1961 by Toots Hibbert, Raleigh Gordon, and Jerry Matthias. Originally known as The Vikings, they made their first recordings in 1962 for Coxsone Dodd. Over the years, they changed their name to The Flames and then finally settled on The Maytals. Some sources suggest that the name change was inspired by Byron Lee following the death of producer Leslie Kong. Their music has been influential in shaping the ska and reggae genres.

Soon after their breakthrough single breached the UK pop charts in 1970, the iconic reggae record company issued a popular LP of the same title, featuring adozen of the trio’s most popular recordings of the past 6 months. The Maytals remained one of Jamaica’s leading acts over the years that immediately followed, with their popularity resulting in a recording deal with Island Records in 1973. There swiftly followed extensive tours of the UK and mainland Europe, prompting Trojan to gather a dozen or so of their earlier works for a belated follow-up to their Monkey Man LP, namely From The Roots. Both albums feature on this essential boss reggae collection, which also includes three rare alternate versions of album tracks, notably Monkey Man and She’s My Scorcher, both of which make their CDdebut.
