An achingly beautiful record from <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/big-thief">Big Thief</a> vocalist, Adrianne Lenker. This is the Minnesota-born musician as she is, with very little else. Her voice is centre stage, which flickers, dancing and diving over the songs like an autumn sun on a frost-bitten morning. Lenker's ability to let you inside, to do away with the barrier between artist and listener is more striking than ever before. The gentle flutters whisper in your ear like secrets shared between you and her. The intimacy is so that every pick, every chord change carries with it an unmilled ripple and a chirp.

Recorded with Luke Temple of Here We Go Magic, the 10 songs were written in snatched moments on the relentless Big Thief tour. Lenker sounds raw, her lyrics organic. They escape her lungs with little scrutiny but plenty of emotion.

The album is understated and unassuming. It could have been discovered in a dusty cabin, penned by a long-lost folk-hero from the 60s. Adrianne serenades us with her songbook of gently reflective golden lullabies wistfully. It's delicate, enchanting and irresistible. A gorgeous and affecting listen especially if you have a tendency for likes of <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/jessica-pratt">Jessica Pratt</a>, <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/kath-bloom">Kath Bloom</a>, and <a href="https://roughtrade.com/us/artist/joan-baez">Joan Baez</a>.

Cat Power is the recording/performing moniker of American singer-songwriter Chan Marshall. Born on January 21, 1972 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, she initially used the name "Cat Power" for her first band in Atlanta during the early 90s. Since then, it has become her stage name.

Richly glorious vocals sing folk for indie kids. Almost Appalachian harmonies are the icing on a homemade cake of indefinable sweetness. Gently tender songs trickle and flow like dancing sunlight. Splashes of piano, loping guitar and a quivering Rhodes help to wrap up the songs in a parcel of loveliness.

Wanderer is, in many ways, a quintessential Cat Power record, with Marshall’s clarion voice front and center in a set of songs that remarkably stark and straightforward. But, if old Cat Power records might easily have been viewed as repositories for pain, Wanderer is, at its heart, a testament to the transformative nature of songs, an album-length imagining of alternate paths, redemptions, connections, and open-ended possibility. 

Cat Power, the vocalist, songwriter, musician, and producer Chan Marshall releases her new album Wanderer via Domino. Produced in its entirety by Marshall, Wanderer includes appearances by long-time friends and compatriots, as well as guest vocals courtesy of friend and recent tour-mate Lana Del Rey. Written and recorded in Miami and Los Angeles over the course of the last few years, the new album Wanderer is a remarkable return from an iconic American voice. Wanderer’s 11 tracks encompass “my journey so far,” says Marshall. “The course my life has taken in this journey - going from town to town, with my guitar, telling my tale; with reverence to the people who did this generations before me. Folk singers, blues singers, and everything in between. They were all wanderers, and I am lucky to be among them.”
