Rough Trade Essential

Neil Young is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter and musician known for his solo releases, collaborations with other artists, and his activism on environmental and political issues. He plays guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. Born in Toronto, Canada in 1945, Young currently holds dual citizenship for Canada and the United States. He has been living in California since the sixties. In 1995, he was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame as a performer. Despite facing delays due to his marijuana use, Young successfully became a United States citizen.
Young's musical career spans several decades and genres including folk rock, country rock, and grunge. As an influential figure in the music industry, he has released numerous critically acclaimed albums both as a solo artist and with various bands such as Crosby Stills Nash & Young (CSNY).
In addition to his musical pursuits, Neil Young also runs Vapor Records - an independent record label that supports emerging artists. His passion for environmental causes led him to co-found Farm Aid - an annual benefit concert that raises funds for family farmers.

Reprise Records, also known as "Reprise", is an American label that was formed in December 1960 by Frank Sinatra. It was created to provide more artistic freedom for Sinatra's own recordings and soon became the home for other members of the "Rat Pack" such as Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. In August 1963, Reprise was sold to Warner Bros. Records, becoming its parent company. While still maintaining artistic control for its artists, Reprise has also served as a distributor for other Warner Music Group labels like Sire Records Company and Tommy Boy Music.

Throughout its history, Reprise has had distinct label features including the iconic tri-color 'steamboat' label with a green quadrant above yellow and the use of different color combinations over time. The label has gone through various changes but has always remained committed to supporting its artists while expanding its responsibilities within the Warner Music Group.

It's important to note that some early 1990s promotional CDs from Reprise Records may have a generic copyright year of "©1990" even though they were released later. Additionally, US cassettes and 8-tracks may have a REP code on the spine or elsewhere near the catalogue number which should not be mistaken as part of the catalogue number itself.

The follow-up to&nbsp;Harvest, On The Beach was Neil's fifth studio album, and featured musicians from Crazy Horse, The Band, as well as David Crosby and Graham Nash. Sparse, underproduced, and at times downright dour, On the Beach was Neil Young's first studio album after Harvest had transformed him into a mainstream superstar two years before. It was a career move akin to "pissin' in the wind," as the artist himself describes life on one of the album's most famous lines. Young had already recorded the harrowing Tonight's the Night, his indictment of '60s drug culture and the damage done, but his label rejected it as too abrasive. So the artist gave them this instead. Less mournful but still haunting, the album is basically Young's rejection of rock stardom and what had become of the counterculture, covering a range of subjects, including Richard Nixon and Patty Hearst (the epic "Ambulance Blues"), his affair with actress Carrie Snodgrass ("Motion Pictures"), and, most famously, years before it became "chic" to do so, Charles Manson (the rocking "Revolution Blues"). "Vampire Blues," meanwhile, seemed to be about all those topics, as well as Young himself. Full of despair and little hope, On the Beach would nevertheless eventually come to be reappraised as a rock culture masterpiece.
